Helicopter Maintenance at Sport Helicopters Cape Town Hanger AMO

At Sport Helicopters, we pride ourselves on offering exceptional helicopter tours that provide breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. A crucial aspect of ensuring the safety and reliability of our services is the meticulous maintenance of our fleet. This responsibility falls to our state-of-the-art Aircraft Maintenance Organization (THE AMO) located at Cape Town International Airport. In this blog post, we will delve into the comprehensive maintenance practices that keep our helicopters airworthy and ready for every adventure.

The AMO: A Hub of Excellence

Our AMO is a premier helicopter maintenance organisation, servicing most of the Bell and Robinson helicopters in Cape Town. This facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by a team of highly skilled engineers. With over 25 years of experience working on Bell and Robinson helicopters, our engineers bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. Their backgrounds in military aircraft maintenance further enhance their capabilities, ensuring that our fleet is maintained to the highest standards.

    Daily Routine Checks

The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. To this end, our pilots conduct routine checks every morning before the day’s operations begin. These checks involve a thorough inspection of each helicopter, ensuring that all systems are functioning correctly and that there are no visible signs of wear or damage. This proactive approach helps us identify and address potential issues before they can impact the safety or performance of our helicopters.

    Comprehensive Maintenance Services

The AMO offers a wide range of maintenance services to keep our fleet in top condition. These services include:

    • Helicopter Inspections: Regular inspections are essential to ensure that our helicopters meet all regulatory requirements and are safe to fly. Our engineers conduct detailed inspections, checking everything from the airframe to the engine.
    • Helicopter Rebuilds: In cases where significant repairs are needed, our team can perform complete helicopter rebuilds. This process involves disassembling the helicopter, repairing or replacing damaged components, and reassembling it to factory specifications.
    • General Maintenance: Routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication, are performed regularly to keep our helicopters running smoothly.
Fault Finding: Our engineers are adept at diagnosing and resolving issues that may arise during the operation of our helicopters. This includes troubleshooting electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and avionics.
    • Airframe Repairs: Damage to the helicopter’s airframe can compromise its structural integrity. Our team is skilled in performing airframe repairs, ensuring that the helicopter remains safe and airworthy.
    • Engine Diagnostics: The engine is the heart of the helicopter, and its performance is critical to safe flight. Our engineers use advanced diagnostic tools to monitor engine health and address any issues that may arise.
    • Helicopter Refurbishment: Over time, the interior and exterior of a helicopter can show signs of wear. Our refurbishment services include interior upholstery, exterior painting, and other cosmetic enhancements to keep our helicopters looking their best.
    • Track and Balance: Proper track and balance of the rotor blades are essential for smooth and stable flight. Our engineers use specialised equipment to ensure that the rotor blades are correctly aligned and balanced.
    • Rust Removal: Rust can weaken the helicopter’s structure and lead to serious safety issues. Our team performs rust removal and corrosion control to protect the integrity of our helicopters.
    • Maintenance Periodical Inspections: Scheduled inspections are conducted at regular intervals to ensure ongoing airworthiness. These inspections cover all aspects of the helicopter’s operation and maintenance.

Certified Parts and Internal Post-Flight Checks

We understand the importance of using high-quality components in our maintenance processes. That’s why we only use aviation-certified parts for all repairs and replacements. This commitment to quality ensures that our helicopters meet the stringent safety standards set by aviation authorities.

    Post-flight checks

Additionally, all post-flight checks are conducted internally by our team of engineers. These checks involve a thorough inspection of the helicopter after each flight, identifying any issues that may have arisen during operation. By addressing these issues promptly, we can maintain the reliability and safety of our fleet.

    Meeting Regulatory Standards

Compliance with aviation regulations is a cornerstone of our maintenance practices. The AMO ensures that all our helicopters have the required Registration and Airworthiness certification, as well as the SACAA-approved flight manual. Our engineers stay abreast of the latest regulations and best practices in airplane and engine operations and maintenance, ensuring that our fleet remains compliant with all relevant standards.

    Our Service

At Sport Helicopters, we are committed to providing safe, reliable, and enjoyable helicopter tours. Our Aircraft Maintenance Organization plays a vital role in achieving this goal by maintaining our fleet to the highest standards. With a team of experienced engineers, state-of-the-art facilities, and a comprehensive range of maintenance services, we ensure that our helicopters are always ready to take to the skies. Whether you’re embarking on a scenic tour or a thrilling adventure, you can trust that our helicopters are in peak condition, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our AMO team.

    General Q&A about helicopter maintenance

1How often is a helicopter serviced / inspected
Ronbinson R44 helicopters do an oil change every 50 hours and a MPI every 100 hours. Bell Helicopters do a MPI every 100 hours. At Sport Helicopters, we frequently rotate our helicopters, and each one undergoes a thorough inspection during the swap. The Bell UH-1 Huey is inspected once a week by a qualified engineer
2Can pilots carry out maintenance on helicopters?
No. Pilots are only allowed to do pre flight checks. If they spot anything that looks abnormal they notify and engineer.
3Where is the maintenance normally done?
Most of the maintenance is performed at our AMO at Cape Town International Airport. However, our engineers often travel to our helibase at the waterfront to conduct inspections and minor services onsite.
4Where do we get the parts from?
The parts are sourced within South Africa. If we are unable to find the required parts locally, we import them from our suppliers.
5Does a helicopters engine be replaced?
After a specified number of hours, depending on the helicopter model, the engine is sent away for inspection and certain parts are replaced. The engine is disassembled and meticulously inspected to ensure all components are in working order.
5How does one become a helicopter engineer?
Engineers must pass specific exams administered by the SACAA Authority and complete an apprenticeship at an approved AMO facility. Trainee engineers are required to gain practical experience under the supervision of a qualified engineer. After accumulating the necessary hours, the trainee must pass a final exam. Once fully qualified, the engineer is sent to attend a factory course at the helicopter manufacturer.
