The Buitenverwachting far is located on the east-facing slopes of the stunning Constantiaberg, was originally part of the Constantia Estate established by Simon van der Stel. He was the first governor of the Dutch colony in South Africa.
In 1773, the farm was sold as a 200-morgen subdivision to Cornelis Brink and over the years changed ownership several times. Despite this, Buitenverwachting prospered as a wine farm, mainly due to the 90,000 vines planted by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the renowned Hendrik Cloete of Constantia, in 1825.
From 1866 the fate of Buitenverwachting became intertwined with that of the Louw and Lategan families. One of the most intriguing figures was Oom Danie Lategan, who was known for wearing a freshly picked camellia on his lapel every day. His daughter, Olivia Lategan, born at Buitenverwachting and later returned as the mistress of the farm after marrying George Louw, linked the Lategan and Louw families.
With a deep appreciation for history, the Mueller family has honored the roots of Buitenverwachting. The farm was beautifully restored to its former glory and carefully replanted with the finest cultivars. The result was a historic first grape harvest of 100 tonnes in 30 years, living up to its name “Beyond Expectation”.
