    Cape Town Stadium

    The history

Located in Cape Town, South Africa, the Cape Town Stadium was constructed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and serves as a stadium for both association football (soccer) and rugby union. During the planning stages, it was referred to as the Green Point Stadium, which was also the name of the previous stadium situated on an adjacent site. It is currently the home ground for Cape Town Spurs (since 2010) and Cape Town City (since 2016), both of which are Premier Soccer League clubs. In addition, the stadium has been hosting the South Africa Sevens rugby tournament since 2015.

Situated in Green Point, the stadium is situated between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean, near the Cape Town city center and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a well-known tourist and shopping location. The stadium’s seating capacity was 64,100 during the 2010 World Cup, which was subsequently decreased to 58,309. A new road connection, Granger Bay Boulevard, links the stadium to the waterfront. The Cape Town Stadium is the largest stadium in Cape Town and the fifth largest in South Africa.

    Construction of the new stadium

Construction on the Cape Town Stadium, situated on the Green Point Common, commenced in March of 2007. Joint venture contractors Murray & Roberts (now known as Concor) and WBHO completed the project within 33 months at a cost of R4.4 billion (approximately US$600 million). The project’s architectural design was created through a collaboration between GMP Architects of Germany and two local firms, Louis Karol and Associates, and Point Architects. The structural engineering was undertaken by a joint venture comprising of BKS, Henry Fagan & Partners, KFD Wilkinson, Goba, Iliso, and Arcus Gibb.

This location is one of our most iconic landmarks, offering a distinct experience every time you visit. Its prime location, ease of access, remarkable legacy, top-tier facilities, staff, and security all combine to create a venue that is much more than just a stadium.
It caters to a wide variety of events, ranging from the arts to sports, music, and significant milestones. This is the place where memories are made.
